Wellness · Must Do
Fingal (near Rye)

Australia's original natural hot springs, drawing geothermal mineral water from deep underground. There are over 70 globally-inspired bathing experiences across two main areas: the family-friendly Bath House and the adults-only Spa Dreaming Centre. The Spa Dreaming Centre is the one to book for couples — quieter, more immersive, with cave pools, hilltop spas, and an unhurried atmosphere.

Don't miss: The hilltop pool at the Spa Dreaming Centre at sunset — one of the most genuinely beautiful spots on the peninsula. Bring a robe and stay until the stars come out.

Insider

Book the Spa Dreaming Centre (adults-only) rather than the standard Bath House — especially for couples. It's the premium experience, quieter, and genuinely worth the extra cost. Sessions run in set time blocks, so book the late-afternoon slot to catch the sunset from the hilltop pool.

The Peninsula has over 100 walking tracks ranging from 30-minute clifftop strolls to serious multi-day expeditions. Two national parks bookend the tip — Point Nepean to the north and Mornington Peninsula National Park to the south — and the vast Greens Bush reserve connects them via the iconic Two Bays Walking Track. April is ideal: the light is extraordinary, the crowds are gone, and wildflowers are beginning to emerge.

Bushrangers Bay via Cape Schanck

Mornington Peninsula National Park · Moderate · 6km return · ~2 hours

Standing on those dark volcanic platforms with Bass Strait crashing in is genuinely breathtaking.

The Cape Schanck Lighthouse stands at the trailhead — Australia's oldest operational lightstation on the Peninsula, and worth exploring before or after the walk. The extension north toward Greens Bush passes through shady banksia groves with sweeping views.

Peninsula Walking

Dogs: Not permitted in Mornington Peninsula National Park or Arthurs Seat State Park. Dogs are welcome at some coastal foreshore walks (Mornington, Sorrento foreshore). Always check signage.
Snakes: Eastern Browns and Tiger Snakes are present in all bushland areas. Stick to the track, wear closed shoes, and give any snakes plenty of space.
Water: No drinking water taps on most bush tracks. Carry at least 1L per person for any walk over 2 hours.
Tides: Some coastal sections are tidal. Check Bureau of Meteorology before any beach traverse.

03

The peninsula has two fundamentally different coastlines. The Port Phillip Bay side offers calm, warm, family-friendly beaches with shallow water and gentle conditions. The Bass Strait (ocean) side is wild, powerful, and achingly beautiful — dramatic surf, towering cliffs, and a raw energy that feels completely different. Both are worth experiencing.

Insider

In April, the bay beaches are still warm enough for a morning dip — the water temperature lags behind the air by a few weeks after summer. The ocean beaches are spectacular but genuinely dangerous for swimming year-round due to rips. Never swim at Back Beach or Gunnamatta without surf lifesaving supervision.
